Landscape with St. John at Patmos
POUSSIN, Nicolas
1640

St. John the Evangelist looks very calm and relaxed. He was sent to the Greek island of Patmos for having his Christian beliefs. He is sitting right next to an eagle, which is a symbol of St. John. He is seen in the foreground writing down his visions of the Apocalypse in the Book of Revelation.

Great Red Dragon and the Beast from the Sea
Blake, William

Next we have “The Great Red Dragon and the Beast from the Sea.” This painting depicts the passage literally, taken from Revelations 13 : 1-
“And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority. “

The First Horseman
Bamberg, Staatsbibliothek

Some think the first horseman could be Christ because of the white horse. The description is very similar to the description of Christ in Rev 19. However, the rider in chapter 6 is described as riding to conquer and the rider in chapter 19 is " the one sitting on the horse was named Faithful and True. For he judges fairly and then goes to war."Also, as another answered, Jesus Christ is opening the seals. He would probably not be one of the riders, also. Additionally, the white horse and its rider is in parallel with the other horsemen. They all would be instruments of judgment. The bow that the horseman on the white horse carries is usually connected with the enemy of the people of God.

The Beast with the Seven Heads

Bamberg, Staatsbibliothek

Revelation 13 introduces a beast, rising out of the sea. It is described as having "ten horns and seven heads", one of which has been injured but later healed. This beast is given authority by the dragon and proceeds to lead the world, being worshipped alongside the dragon. It is shown leading the whole world with the exception of those whose names are written in the Book of Life, and as making war against the saints.

Luke =)

Luke is different that the other gospels because he includes a lot about women and poor people. In addition Luke included a lot of speech and interaction between Jesus and his followers.

1. Luke starts his gospel with an introduction that explains the purpose of this Gospel from the writer.

2. Events surrounding the coming of Jesus Christ and John the Baptist. This section describes the birth of Jesus and some events of His childhood

3. Next are the events leading to the public ministry of Jesus, including His baptism and His temptation.

4. Following His baptism, Luke goes on to tell about the beginning of Christ's ministry, choosing His 12 Apostles, and performing miracles. Throughout these chapters, Jesus displayed many powers that validated His authority given to Him by God--the authority to know our thoughts, the authority to heal people, the authority to bring peace to people, and the authority over nature by calming a storm. This section also describes many lessons and teachings of Jesus that are principles for living according to God's way of life.

5. Jesus performs the miracle of feeding five thousand people with five loafs of bread and two fish. The Apostle Peter confesses that Jesus is the Christ (also known as the Messiah).

6. Jesus gives His followers instructions on how to help others through discipleship; Jesus teaches us how to pray effectively to God; Jesus warns people how not to act, including being hypocritical and judgmental; Jesus tells His followers not to worry about common concerns in life, but to trust God; and Jesus gives people a stern warning that we must repent or perish.

7. The end of this Gospel describes the important details about the trial, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus again shows His authority by knowing everything around Him. Jesus gives many final instructions about how to live and how to rely on God. He again confirms His authority as the Son of God. Finally, Chapter 24 details the resurrection of Jesus and His ascension to heaven.

Mark =)

1. Mark begins with a quotation from Isaiah, the Old Testament prophet, and John the Baptist, who prophesied the coming of the Messiah. In addition, the beginning of Mark includes the baptism and the temptation of Jesus.

2. Jesus calls Simon Peter and his brother Andrew to follow Him for ministry along with the other ten disciples. Jesus starts performing miracles during this section of the book known as His Galilean Ministry.

3. Miracle of feeding five thousand people with five loaves of bread and two fish. This chapter also describes the miracle of Jesus walking on water, Peter's confession that Jesus is the Messiah, and the transfiguration. Jesus then predicts His death and resurrection.

4. Jesus then goes to Judea.. There, He teaches on many subjects, performs the miracle of restoring sight to a blind man that shows faith and again predicts His death and resurrection to His disciples.

5. In Jerusalem, Jesus teaches many lessons through answering questions, telling parables and giving warnings to people. Mark then tells of the Lord's Supper. Jesus is then arrested, tried and crucified on the cross. The last section of Mark details the account of the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the tomb.

Matthew! =)

1. Matthew begins with giving the genealogy of Jesus--Son of David, Son of Abraham, etc. After multiple generations, Jacob begot Joseph, the husband of Jesus' mother, Mary. Mary got pregnant, and Joseph was thinkin about taking a hike--til an angel showed up to him and told him what was going on.

2. Matthew says that Jesus came to John the Baptist and asked him if he would baptize Him. And when John the Baptist had baptized Jesus the Bible says that the heavens opened and a dove came out and God said, “This is my Son in whom I am well pleased.”

3. The Devil tempted Jesus three times and all three times Jesus quoted scripture to him and told him to depart from Him. Jesus finds 2 disciples.

4. Accounts of the ministry of Jesus while in Galilee. During this time, He commissions the 12 Apostles, preaches The Beatitudes, performs miracles and teaches many lessons on very important subjects including; adultery, divorce, giving, prayer, judging, worry, treasures in Heaven and warnings to people. Jesus begins teaching in parables to provide examples to His lessons.

5. Return of Jesus to Galilee and the prediction of His death

6. Trial and crucifixion of Jesus on the cross as a sacrifice for all the sin in the world.

7. The events of the resurrection and Jesus defeating death
