Landscape with St. John at Patmos
POUSSIN, Nicolas

St. John the Evangelist looks very calm and relaxed. He was sent to the Greek island of Patmos for having his Christian beliefs. He is sitting right next to an eagle, which is a symbol of St. John. He is seen in the foreground writing down his visions of the Apocalypse in the Book of Revelation.

Great Red Dragon and the Beast from the Sea
Blake, William

Next we have “The Great Red Dragon and the Beast from the Sea.” This painting depicts the passage literally, taken from Revelations 13 : 1-
“And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority. “

The First Horseman
Bamberg, Staatsbibliothek

Some think the first horseman could be Christ because of the white horse. The description is very similar to the description of Christ in Rev 19. However, the rider in chapter 6 is described as riding to conquer and the rider in chapter 19 is " the one sitting on the horse was named Faithful and True. For he judges fairly and then goes to war."Also, as another answered, Jesus Christ is opening the seals. He would probably not be one of the riders, also. Additionally, the white horse and its rider is in parallel with the other horsemen. They all would be instruments of judgment. The bow that the horseman on the white horse carries is usually connected with the enemy of the people of God.

The Beast with the Seven Heads

Bamberg, Staatsbibliothek

Revelation 13 introduces a beast, rising out of the sea. It is described as having "ten horns and seven heads", one of which has been injured but later healed. This beast is given authority by the dragon and proceeds to lead the world, being worshipped alongside the dragon. It is shown leading the whole world with the exception of those whose names are written in the Book of Life, and as making war against the saints.
